Instructions To Make Apple Pop Tarts

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out one half of your dough onto a lightly floured surface to a 13 by 11 inch rectangle (about 1/4 inch thick). Trim dough so sides are even and straight, to a 12 by 10 inch rectangle.
  3. Cut the dough into eight 5 by 3 inch rectangles. Arrange half of your rectangles onto your prepared parchment lined baking sheet. Set aside.
  4. In a pot or large skillet, heat the diced apples, sugar, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg on medium-low heat until the apples are soft and tender. This will take about 10 minutes. Stir the apples occasionally to make sure they are all cooking evenly.
  5. Mash the apple mixture as much as you can with a fork or a potatoes masher.
  6.  Use roughly 2 tbsp worth of filling and place it in the middle of the rectangles that are on your baking sheet. Leave about 1/4 inch around the edge.
  7. Place the other rectangles on top of the filled ones. Crimp the edges and pierce the tops with a fork. You should leave a little bit of space between each pop tart.
  8. Whisk your egg in a bowl and brush the top of your pop starts lightly with the egg wash.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges become slightly firm. Allow to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  10. Carefully transfer your pop tarts to a cooling rack to firm up. They may be a little soft fresh out of the oven but don’t worry – they won’t stay that way.
Icing:
  1. Once your pop tarts have completely cooled, make your icing by whisking together all of your ingredients until smooth. Add in extra milk if it is too thick, 1 tbsp at a time.
  2. Spoon your icing over top of your pop tarts and top with crushed cookies, and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions About Apple Pop Tarts

Can I heat homemade pop tarts in the toaster?

I do not recommend heating these in your toaster, as the icing will melt and cause a big mess. Instead, I recommend heating for a few seconds in the microwave.

Can I freeze homemade pop tarts?

Yes! Freeze in an airtight container for up to 4 months.
